In a nondecorative traverse rod the top of the drapery is at the same level as the rod. To get the drapery length measure from the top of the rod to however long you want the drapery to be.
If you have no rod then measure the window frame and go a couple inches, like 7", above the window frame. Most drapery pleats are 5" which is why 7" is a good size to go above the window frame. In the example to the left, the Monarch pleat is 8" long which is why we went 11" above the window frame starting from the bottom of the rings. The above picture has the Nahlia(drapery) and Calyann(sheer) pleats which are both 5".
To get the length in a decorative rod measure from the bottom of the rings down to however long you want the drapery to be.
In the above example the length from the bottom of the rings to the floor is 90" and then 6" was added for the puddle giving a drapery length of 96". If no puddle is desired then the drapery length would be like 89, 89.5,....depending on how much off the floor you want your drapery to be.
If you have no rod then measure the window frame and go a couple inches, like 7", above the window frame. Most drapery pleats are 5" which is why 7" is a good size to go above the window frame. In the above example, the Monarch pleat is 8" long which is why we went 11" above the window frame starting from the bottom of the rings. Notice that the rod itself is higher than the bottom of the rings.

To get the width of the drapery in a nondecorative traverse rod measure the rod from end to end. Then you add for the returns in the end and overlaps in the middle of the rod. The return is the part of the drapery that bends from the end of the rod to the wall. The purpose of the return is to cover the brackets of the rod from the side.
As an example, if a center open rod measures 80" from end to end then add 10" for the returns(3" on each side, for 6", and then 4" for the overlaps in the middle for a total of 10"). The drapery width is 90".
*Note: if rod is one way open then the drapery width is 84". Also if you have double rods then the drapery measurements would be different. Returns are usually 3"-3.5" but can be different. If you have no rod then measure the frame and go out like 5" or so out on each side. The drapery, as you can see in the picture to the left, is wider than the frame. The amount of inches wider than the frame is a personal preference.
In a decorative rod measure the rod from end to end, not including the finials, and then add for the overlaps. In the example above if the rod width is 80" then add 2" for the overlaps to get a drapery width of 82".
*Note: Returns are optional in decorative rods but if desired then the drapery width is bigger. The return is the part of the drapery that bends from the end of the rod to the wall. If you have no rod then measure the frame and go out like 5" or so out on each side. The drapery as you can see in the above picture is wider than the frame. The amount of inches wider than the frame is a personal preference.

Inside mount
Allows the window treatment to hang inside the frame of your window. Check the depth so that we can be sure it will accommodate the mounting board. When taking measurements for inside mounted window treatments, please make deductions of .25" to .375".
If the width is 50" and the length is 40" and if we make a .25" deduction. Then the size for the shade is 49.75" x 40". Note, the deduction is only for the width not the length in most cases.
Measuring for Shades/Blinds/Silhouettes/Shutters
Outside mount
Allows the window shade to hang above the window casing or molding. It may also give the illusion of a taller window. How you measure for outside mount shades really depends on the type of window frame you have, if any frame at all.
In a frameless window, like picture #1 on the bottom left, if the width is 50" and the length is 40" and if we add 3" on each side of the window. Then the size for the shade is 56" x 46". Note, the amount of inches you add on each side is a personal preference. Thus, you can add more or less than 3" on the sides.
If the window has a frame, then the size of the shade really depends on where you want the shade to be on the frame. The shade can even go on the outside of the frame, if desired.

*** Buckram is the stiff paper in the head of the draperies. On non-decorative rods all draperies should have buckram. On decorative rods draperies can have buckram, but it is best not to have buckram to give that not so stiff appearance which looks best on decorative rods. However, very thin fabrics like sheers must have buckram.
